Importing emails & contacts from external XP hard drive to Vista

Please help we are complete novices.
Our old XP computer died. We paid for someone to put our hard drive into a
caddy. He said he had copied all the contacts and emails so that we could
access them.
but our new computer is Vista and we can't seem to import them - we get
error messages.
We can see the two folders on the external drive - one is WAB files and the
other DBX whatever that means
We have read some of the posted messages but find them difficult to
understand what to do.
Can someone explain in very very simple steps what we should do.
Also on our new computer we seem to have Outlook and Windows Mail - which is
the easiest to use - I think at the moment Outlook is the one connected to
our ISP
