Recovering messages after hard drive failure

We had a hard drive failure and have to reconfigure our computer. We have a
backup of the users which includes a backup of their mail files in
C:\[User]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail. We have reconfigured
Windows Mail and added the news servers we had before.

Now, how do we get copy the subscribed groups and messages, including the
old sent messages, from the backup into our new configuration of Windows
Mail?

You can drag the eml and nws files back into the Winmail folders from
Explorer. Just select one (or many) and drag and drop it over the message
list and it will get incorporated into the folder.

I you had backed up the registry settings, it would be simpler, but since
you didn't you have to manually import the files. You can try File | Import
| Messages and then point to a directory of eml files and I think it will
import them, but then it places them into the Imported Messages branch of
the Folder list and you have to move them where you want them.

You will also have to set the NGs back up manually. See
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx for next time. If you had backed up the registry
keys as well, then you could have just merged those and put the messages in
the correct places and then it would have started as you had before with the
same setup.

My OEX program (www.oehelp.com/OEX/) will also allow you to import the mail
messages back into Winmail.

Thanks, Steve. I believe the user can also export these items for import
after the rebuild, but we did not do this either. Exporting would probably
be better than fooling with the registry, correct?

File | Export only works for if you have Outlook or Exchange installed.
