. IIS install on XP Pro

Good morning newsgroup,

Need to install Visual Basic Studio 2003. VBS 2003 says need to install IIS and FrontPAge extensions to do web based work. IIS installs(which I assume will include FP extensions) says it cannot find infocomm.dll and ask me to put XP Professional Service Pack 1 into drive. Tried to download SP1 but the download page takes me to a page that scans my drive and does updates but does not download the service pack. How can I get IIS to install on XP?

Thanks.

You can try this as it might work. First download SP1 from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp

Extract the SP1 download to a folder on your root drive.

For example to: C:\XPSP1

Create a System Restore Point as you are about to modify the registry.

Go to Start->Run and type REGEDIT to open the registry editor.

Expand the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

In the right hand pane double click "ServicePackSourcePath" key and modify

the value to c:\xpsp1

You might have to reboot.

Then try IIS install again.

Good morng Phil,

Thanks for your excellent reply.
Went to page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp
The page says
"We’re sorry, but there is no Microsoft.com Web page matching your entry.
It is possible that you typed the address incorrectly, or that the page no longer exists. You may wish to try another entry or to use the links below, which we hope will help provide you with the information you need."

There were however, three links that looked promising
Windows Downloads
Microsoft Windows Update: Downloads for Windows
and
Microsoft Download Center

The first took me to a page titled Windows Downloads and Ptoducts Updates
where there is a link called Windows XP Professional. This goes to
a page titled Windows XP Downloads. This has a link called Software Updates
which goes to Windows XP Software Updates which has a link called
Windows XP Service Pack 1a. This leads to a page called Windows XP Service Pack 1a. There is no download link on this page only a link called Express Installation
This goes to Windows XP Service Pack 1a Express Installation which has a
link called Windows XP SP1a. This link goes to a Windows Update page
which wants to Scan for Updates. No download of the service pack.

The second link, Microsoft Windows Update: Downloads for Windows
This link goes directly to the Windows Update page which was the final destination
of link one above, which wants to Scan for Updates. No download of the service pack.

The third link, Windows Download Center, ask for the product from a drop down box.
Selecting Windows Xp and inputting keywords 'service pack' took me to a list
which included Windows XP Service Pack 1a Express Install (32-bit) for End Users.
This page has a download button which downloaded the service pack.

Currently away from computer which needs installation. Will install service pack and update thread.

Thanks again.

They must have changed the link. I just copied and pasted it from my help
documents I have. I'll have to update that info. Thanks for the feedback on
the link. Hopefully it helps you out. Post back when you try the install.

Good afternoon Phil,

Its taken me a couple of days to get back to you because I have been jammed
at work on a new web site.

I downloaded the Sp1aexpress.exe and saved it in a dir, XPSP1, on my root
drive. I executed the file and it began the Windows XP Service Pack Wizard
which told me to back up my computer and create a Restore Point. I did this
which was instructive. I then ran the the Service Pack Wizard which took
about twenty minutes and rebooted my machine. I then modfied the
ServicePackSourcePath key per your excellent, clear instructions and rebooted
again. I then tried to install IIS but I got the "Cannot find infocomm.dll"
error again.
I think that we expected the Service Pack file to extract a number of files
to the dir, XPSP1 that I created for the Service Pack. After the Service Pack
Wizard ran there was still only the one file, Sp1aexpress.exe, in the XPSP1
dir.
Parenthetically, during my several attempts to load IIS I accidentally
unloaded my Accessories and Games. I went to Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, Add/ Remove Window Components, Accessories and Utilities, and made
sure every thing was checked. The component install ran but only the
internet games would install.
I tried it several times unsuccesfully, went to work came back tried it
again and it added Freecell, Solitaire, etc. So I suspect something is goofy
about the Add/Remove Windows Components element.

I really need to get the IIS installed so I can install VB Studio 2003
because I am falling behind in my coursework. Do you have any other ideas?
Should I pony up the $35 for an email incident?

Thanks.
