IE6 shuts down after closing acrobat reader links

Every time I close a link to a .pdf file, IE6 quits
working. No error message...it just freezes up for about
15 seconds then all IE6 windows close on their own. This
happens if I'm surfing and click a link that opens a .pdf
file in a new window...close that window and the original
window locks up and shusts down all open IE6 windows.

Pentium 4 processor
Windows XP home
IE6
all security upgrades and service packs installed
