IE6 - Restricted sites not working

D

Don McLean

Hi all,

IE6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
128 Bit encryption
Update version :;SP2;

I have an application (Aluria Spyware Eliminator) that populates IE with a
list of restricted sites. The site names all use wildcards in the style of
" *.0800i.net " The list of restricted sites is very large.

I have defaulted all the security settings for all the Zones. However I
can still browse to all of the sites. I even entered a specific site
www.123search.com and can still browse to this as well.

I feel I must be doing something not quite correctly.

Anyone any thoughts??

Don,

Adding a site/domain to Restricted Sites list does not prevent the user from browsing that site. To block a site, you may use the HOSTS file or at the firewall level.

Ah Ha.... .....

Did a bit of more reading (RTFM) and now understand the purpose of
"Restricted sites"

I was aware that you can spoof DNS / Domain names by inserting the loopback
address in the hosts file, but that was not really what I was expecting ..

Thanks for the super quick reply

Even better method (via software) would be using a third-party firewall like ZA. If you're using ZA, you can create Expert Rules and block certain IP/Host/Group etc.
