IE6 cannot remove

I'm running Windows 2000Pro and IE6 has stopped working. I've tried reinstalling it from a CD, but I cannot because "a more receint version is already running". I cannot find it in Add/remove programs, the Internet Explorer folder in program files doesn't have an ie.exe file. I've had a tech person here to "fix" the problem. He said there's still part of IE somewhere and he cannot find it to remove it so the program can be reinstalled. He (the hired tech) said I could a: reinstall the original operating system, or b: upgrade to XP Pro. I'm really not comfortable reinstalling the original system, even though I have the recovery disk. If I did do this, would I loose everything? Upgrading to XP Pro is an option, but I just remember the nightmare of upgrading from 95 to 98.

Is it worth calling one of those companies in the recent PC magazine and paying them to try to find the problem and correct it?

Any other suggestions?

I'm at a loss. IE hasn't worked for about 2 months now (my husband went into some site that did something to it). Getting rid of the husband is not an option.

Thanks.

Well, you wrote that you couldn't re-install IE6 and method 2 allows you to.

Eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
