IE6 browser prompt: Do you wish to move or copy files from this zone?

A

Al Christoph

The subject prompt (Do you wish to move or copy files from this zone?) has
appeared as of the February security update. Questions:

1) How do you turn this off?
2) Whose bright idea was it to turn it on?
3) Where do I send a note to let him know what I think of his
parentage?-))))

This has happened on all PC's that I have tested it on.
Trying the things suggested when I googled, made no difference and does not
seem relevant. (The zone setting of 1802 was 0 for all except the restricted
zone.)
A quick overview of zone security options did not pop up anything obvious.

This kind of drastic change in monthly updates is NOT appreciated. And we
won't even discuss what the reboot from the Feb update did to my email. My
email provider is still trying to figure out how to get my mail box
unclogged. (26 or 57 MB of mail backed up depending on where they look.)

Needless, to say I'm no longer running the autoinstall feature of windows
update on that PC.

Regards,
Al

Recent critical security updates have restricted Drag and Drop and
Copy/Paste (among others) between IE security zones.

See IE Tools>Internet Options>Security>[zone]>Custom>Miscellaneous>...

Thanks for the response.

In checking the zones as you have suggested I see that
Drag and drop or copy and paste files
is set to enable for all zones as it always has been. There are also prompt
and disable options.

It appears that MS now treats enable as prompt. Is this correct? If so this
is a ridiculous and very annoying change!

Or am I missing another setting.

Is doco'd in a KB article? A quick search did not turn up anything.

[<whispers> Look at the very last entry in Miscellaneous, Al. You must deal
with this setting in each Zone.]

Be careful! There are Bad Guys out there that will take advantage of the
exposed vulnerabilities in this less-than-secure setting. This change was
done for your Protection. I would only enable it when absolutely necessary
and on a per-case basis.

If by the very last entry you mean the one that begins "Web sites ..." then
I'm afraid that setting that to enable in all four zones did NOT help. Even
leaving IE and returning did not help. Reboot requried?

To the lurkers at MS, i trust that this will work much, much better in IE7.
If a person has permission to copy and paste or drop and drag and does it
manually, then they don't want to be bugged. You need to be able to detect
the difference betweeen a scripted operation and a manual operation. (Yes,
that probably violates some principle of equivalence of all operations, but
excess bugging of users is NOT appreciated. See David Pogues of the NY Times
on line column from this week.)

Al

Reboot requried?

Yes. You're changing a Registry setting.
