IE5 Temp Internet Folder

Marcus

Hi,

What is the "IE5.Content folder" in Windows /Temporary Internet Files all
about?
I deleted it and then couldn't get a lot of ads and multimedia features in
IE6 to work.
When I restored it, all was well. Why is this sub- folder in a temporary
folder?

Thanks......

Still, I would like to know if the IE5 folder is, in fact, NECESSARY to
running any IE6 functions. If I just deleted it, shouyld this cause any
problem?

Hi Marcus :)

Yes, they are necessary, and, no, deleting the folder will not harm your
computer, as when you delete the folder, Windows just creates a new one on
the next boot.

However, if you still need to delete the folder, here's an easy way to do
it:

Just rename the folder Content.IE5 to whatever you want. After the next
reboot, you will be able to delete the entire old folder Content.IE5 with
all its files. Windows will create a new Content.IE5 folder with a clean
index.dat and 4 brand-new sub-folders. Same for Windows\Cookies or
Windows\History, just rename the folder Cookies in another name and it will
be possible to delete the Index.dat in Cookies after a reboot. Then you can
just delete the renamed files after the new one is created.

Normally, users are only advised to do this if there is indication of
corruption in these folders. If you are having a problem you think is
related, please post the details and we;'ll try to help.

Hope this helps :)

Hi,

No problems currently, but I have, in the past, found viruses in this folder
and in 'Downloaded program files.'
I'm wondering if the virus can't be cleaned, is deleting the entire folder
is feasible as an alternative? Sounds like it is.

Yes...if indeed there are problems with the folder. The easiest way is to
just rename the folder, as IE5 Contnets._OLD and then reboot, which will
create a new one, then delete the old one. But, be sure that you do a good
scan of your system with the AV and other scumware tools in case there are
residual files elsewhere, which there can be. And..... remember to empty
the recycle bin.
