IE/XP SP2

Since loading SP2 I cannot open .PDF files from within IE6. When I open the
"manage add-ons" list Adobe acobat control for activex is disabled. When I
select this item I dont get the option to enable. I get the message this item
is managed by your administrator? I am logged on as an administrator and I
can open PDF files in Outlook Express ok. I have Spyblaster installed but I
disabled it while I downloaded Acobat Reader 6.0. Finally I have windows
firewall disabled as I also have Norton 2005 and use its firewall. Any help
will be appreciated.

Hi Willby :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Try here:

or................

For best security set Active X settings to:

My settings are for Active X are:
Prompt
Disable
Disable
Prompt
Prompt

or.....

1. Try temporarily disabling your firewall to see if HTTPS then works
correctly.
2. You may have other software installed that is blocking ActiveX content.
3. An option in anti-spyware software you installed and enabled.
4. Could be a BHO (browser helper object) that you installed to provide
additional protection; use BHO Demon to see them, or use Spybot's tools to
list them.
5. You may have used SpywareBlaster to install kill switches in the registry
so certain ActiveX controls will not run, and you've hit one of those
malware AX controls.
6. It may be that you installed lots of other stuff that will affect the web
over which IE has no control.
7. It may be that the deveoper of the website has programmed something into
the page that is causing the problem. You will have to contact the
webmaster and let them know.

Hi Ramesh & Jan . Thanks for replies. I went to the site you suggested Ramash
since it specifically detailed my problem exactly. I think the instructions
are for XP PRO only as when I open the registery I can navigate as far as
\currentversion\policies but the next item\EXT is missing in all the
suggested paths. Any thoughts?

Willby,

Have you checked all the four registry paths?

hi Ramesh,I have just rebooted my pc and had a look at thhe registery again.
The position is as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\...........when I navigate as far as\ POLICIES I do not
get the next folder in the list i.e. \EXT
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\.........\EXT All that is in the right pane is:
Default Reg Sz Value not set.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\..........\EXT\CLSID The first line of the rt. pane is:
Default Reg Sz value not set
There then follows a long string of nos with all data set to 0
The files I am trying to read are Adobe .pdf files. I have the latest
version of Adobe Reader. I downloaded Firefox last night and I have no
difficulty reading the .pdf files with it. Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Ramesh
Many thanks for your last post which led me to a previous post of yours
concerning the same problem as I was having. The good news is that thanks to
your info and guidance I have successfully edited the registery and removed
the offending item. Again many thanks for your invaluable assistance.
