IE won't play embedded video (and goes to 100%)

Hi everyone. Thanks for taking the time to try to solve my problem.

I recently lost my hard drive to mechanical failure, and had to buy a new
one. After getting everything reinstalled on the new one (including the
latest video, audio, and directx drivers), I noticed some problems. First
and formost, whenever I open a page with an embedded video file in internet
explorer (such as msn video), I get extreme lag (20 frames a minute), and the
Internet explorer process shoots up to 90%-100%. I have to ctrl-alt-del and
shut down the page to get out of it. I'm pretty sure it's not spyware or
malware because I've just installed a new hard drive.

I've also noticed some choppy music playback on media player sometimes when
I'm doing other things (but this may not be related). (I opened the task
manager and media player was at about 85 percent at the time of the
choppiness). Do you have any ideas of what's going on? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

What operating system is installed now (Please don't say Linux :) and how
much memory does the system have? Memory is not that expensive and can make
a huge difference, if there isn't enough the drive will be used to make up
for it causing the drive to get hammered by lots of extra work and choppy
video as the computer goes memory-drive-memory-drive etc.

If you have gone from (say) 98 to XP or something it may be as simple as
that. I use some quite old machines which came with 98 / ME originally and
about 64 MB of ram. They are about worthless for XP / 2000 with 64Mb but
increase to about 256 (512 preferably) and they become usable for some
things again.

If you have reinstalled something like 98 then memory is not so critical,
although I think at least 128 might help.

Thanks for your response. I actually took it into a pc repair place and they
reinstalled all of my motherboard drivers which solved the problem. I think
I also have a bad stick of memory, so they've got it right now and are
checking it out.

Thanks!

No problem, thanks for replying because it helps others too.

If you get XP or higher installed go for as much memory as you can afford :)
