IE going online causes application launch to hang

T

I have been reading a lot of Group's solutions and tips in an attempt
to find what was causing my Berlitz Language System app to stop
launching after it had launched and run successfully multiple times.
After it would not launch, I had to reboot the system to get the app
to launch again.

Not finding an answer, but believing the problem was associated with a
corrupt Startup item, I used MSCONFIG in an attempt to find that
Startup item. I disabled all Startup items then enabled / rebooted
them one at a time, launching BLS after each reboot. When I was
finished, BLS had not failed to launch and all Startup items were
enabeled. So, Startup isn't the problem.

I then started launching and shutting down other apps to see if any of
them was the problem. What I found was that only one app affected the
BLS launch, IE7. After launching IE, opening a webpage and then
exiting IE, the BLS app would not launch. Had to reboot system, then
it launched, until IE went online, then, BLS would not launch. No
other online app had this affect.

I also found that the lost connection problem I was having with an
HPLJ4 attached via LPT1 was associated with IE. After each of the
reboots, I could print a test page from the printer. After going
online with IE, the printer was dead until I rebooted the system.

IE7 on XP Pro SP2

Now running FireFox 3.0.8, and it does not cause the above problems.

I would be interested if anyone has any idea about what is happening
via IE?

What / where could I check or read?

Thanks.

Sorry about that. I didn't realize I was in the IE6 NG until after I
had hit the POST button. Thought I best re-post in the group that
deals with IE7 problems. Didn't intend to crosspost. Won't happen
again.

Thank you for your response and suggested diagnostics. I will report
back after I have tried all of them.

I thought of Add-Ons as being a potential problem. I checked Win
Patrol and saw several 'IE Helpers' I have no idea what they are or
where they came from. Seemed to be some duplicates in there as well.
Where can I find out which ones I need to get rid of and how to do
that?

Thanks again.

Go through #1 - #4 in my first reply before we get into deep discussions
about Add-ons, please.

Have done that and the results are below.

No, so I disabled the unfamiliar Add-Ons and it works fine in regular
mode.

Good reading, thanks.
3. Does the behavior persist if you boot into Safe Mode with Networking?
[Careful! Only remain in Safe Mode just long enough to test!]

Did not have to try this, but good to know.

Avira AntiVir FREE - current. Active scanner - Avir Guard - is on.

Spyware Blaster is the only anti-spyware. No active scanner. Use
Malware Bytes and A2 to scan.

Had Kaspersky installed (and probably running) when IE7 was
installed. Win Patrol and ThreatFire could have also been running.
All but Win Patrol have been replaced or eliminated.

Norton AV free trial (2004), but got rid of it and all traces via
Norton's uninstall app years ago.

Norton Works, replaced with Kaspersky because of slow everything.
Scanned with Reg Seeker to remove all Symantec/Norton dregs.

McAfee Site Advisor was installed, but it was one of the Add-Ons that
I got rid of via Revo.

Thanks for your help, IE and Berlitz seem to be living in perfect
harmony, so far. Always skeptical about an app I've had problems
with.

There was another good result of this problem, I got FireFox fired up
and am now using it as my primary browser.

Now, back to getting that HP LJ4 to work on this machine. Thought IE
was the problem there, but the problem came back. Off to another NG.

Thanks again, always enjoy reading your posts.
