IE BROWSER STOPPED WORKING AFTER DOWNLOAD !!!

Desperately Searching!

I use windows xp home editon,use AVG 8 free virus detector and IE 7.I
recently wanted to upgrade to IE8 yesterday and downloaded it(so I thought
because doesn't show.Still IE7)it said successful and after restarting my
browser don't work.It seems to open a few seconds but no information bar on
top where it says Internet Explorer, or toolbars or anything then just
closes.Can't open it thru programs either.Everything else seems to be
working.AIM and virus program,music,videos and so on...I did download mozilla
firefox 3-4 days earlier but I don't know it that did it.Please help I don't
know much about this stuff,I really am frasturated and using other computers
for this.THANX !

URGENT HELP to CA !!!

I did up until the end where it said successfull.You have to restart.But
after the problem occured..I ckeck under the add/remove programs list and it
shows the older version only.
