Removing the update notice icon

R

Roy

Hello group
There is this pesky windows update notice that I don't like:
' Updates are ready for your computer Click here to instal these
updates'
This pertains about the download of IE8 which I hate to instal as I am
not impressed with it and would rather prefer the IE6.
However I have no idea where that file is located so I can just delete
it to remove that annoying prompt whenever I finished booting my PC.
I am not against any windows update except only for this IE7 and IE8
browser...

Can anybody point me to that direction?
BTW
My PC is already WinXPSp3, then why in Christ sake MS is still forcing
users to instal that IE8 update?
I would rather instal a third party browser than IE8 which to me was
unimpressive.
TIA

Control Panel>>Security Center>>"Change the way Security Center alerts me"

Another option is uncheck the update you don"t want to install.

Control Panel, Automatic Updates. Set Automatic Updates to notify you but do
not download and install. Click apply and exit. When updates are available, a
yellow shield will appear in the system tray. Click on the shield and select
Custom Install and a box will open showing you what updates are available. If
you don't want any of them, uncheck the ones that you don't want, like IE8.
Click Install, and another box opens where you can tell it not to notify you
of that update again. Check that, and it won't.

Notice that Microsoft isn't forcing you to install anything. If you don't
know how to use Windows, that's what google is for.

Thanks for your informative reply but what confuses me is :
Internet Explorer 8 Delivery through Automatic Updates
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/updatemanagement/dd365125.aspx

I can find that option, don't instal in my WinXPSp3 OS
What I got is this
How do you instal automatic updates?
Option 1- express instal (recommended)
Option 2-custom instal (advanced)

Another question - supposing I download the IE8 accidentally then have
not yet installed the IE8 blocker would the blocking option still
effective if I accidentally click instal the IE8?

Automatic Updates is already installed; it's in Control Panel.
Option 1- express instal (recommended)
Option 2-custom instal (advanced)

Click "Change the way Automatic Updates notifies me". Set it to "Notify me
but do not download or install. Click "ok" and exit.

When updates become available, a yellow shield appears in the system tray.
Click the shield, and a box opens allowing you to choose "Express" or
"Custom" install. Select the "Custom" button, a box will open showing the
available updates. Uncheck the ones you don't want including IE8. Click
"Install" and another box opens that askes you whether or not you want to be
notified ever again of those updates. Tell it "No" and you won't ever be
notified again.
Another question - supposing I download the IE8 accidentally then have
not yet installed the IE8 blocker would the blocking option still
effective if I accidentally click instal the IE8?

You can uninstall IE8 in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel if you install
by mistake.

If you do not wish to turn off Automatic Updates, just tell MS not to
bother you about IE8 again.

Using Internet Explorer, perform a Windows Update which will take you
to the Microsoft update site.

Check for updates, if/when it suggests IE8, deny it and tell it to
hide this "important" update and never remind you again. You can
always install it later, you just won't be reminded.

I like to visit the site once in a while anyway because you can see MS
updates that are not critical to XP, but might be critical to things
like, ohhhh, Outlook, etc.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]

(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect IE8 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start

Have you considered using another browser like Firefox?

It's smaller in size, very customizable and should have the same
functionality as IE8.

And for the very small number of sites that require IE,
there's an option to "Always open this page in Internet
Explorer".

Firefox is my alternative browser already but I still don't want to
part with IE6 although it does not support yet tabbed browsing which
FF does...<sigh>
