IE 6 Problem

IE 6 will not save any temporary internet files. I've gone to Internet
Options General Settings and tried to adjust the space available for
temporary internet files. It initially shows 0MB and when I adjust the space
to say 4MB, I get an Error window that says "Please select a value between 1
and 0 for how much space temporary internet files may use". It will also not
allow a value less than 1 so there doesn't seem to be any way to provide
storage space for these files. The only related thing that has happened
recently is that I installed WinXP update KB946627 that is supposed to fix IE
6 crashes that occur when visiting websites. Can anyone help with this
problem?

Thanks for the links to possible solutions but neither of them worked. I do
not have McAfee so that option was out. The other link does not indicate it
applies to IE 6. I did try it but do not have a "Restart in MS-DOS mode" at
shutdown and using the DOS Prompt option in Windows Accessories resulted in
the "smartdrv" command not being recognized. Any other ideas would be
appreciated.

I should also mention that I got a Norton virus alert yesterday saying I have
the Bloodhound.Exploit.109 virus. I did a full computer scan with Norton AV
and it found nothing.

Thanks for the link to a possible solution.

I did try the steps suggested and did a Restart. I have since gone back to
try to set the TIF folder to accept more than 0 MB and I get the same Error
as before "Please select a value between 1 and 0 for how much space temporary
internet files may use".

Can you offer any other thoughts or ideas to help me solve this problem?

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
I think my situation just got worse. I have tried to download several
spyware detection programs and also a program called Cache Sentry. In all
cases, the download started and then stopped immediately with an error box
that says "IE was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is
either unavailable or cannot be found". The only programs I currently have
installed are Spybot, Ad-Aware SE and Norton AV/Systemworks. I have run all
of these and fixed the issues they found.

Would it help to convert to IE 7?

A very frustrating problem, especially at this time of year.

I was unable to download HijackThis with the computer running normally. I
even tried three times. I also tried several other malware detection/repair
programs and got the same error ( "IE was not able to open this Internet
site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found" ) every
time. I did try downloading a Microsoft update through their site and it
worked, but that does not seem to use the same downloading routine.

I can switch the computer to Safe Mode with Networking but I could not
figure out how to connect it to the Internet in that mode. It didn't seem to
hook up to my wireless connection. I'm probably missing something.

I'm about ready to try the local computer repair shop after Christmas.

That's an excellent idea. I would NOT allow the machine to be connected to
the internet or any networks in its current state.

Same idea. You just have to adapt it to an NTx OS.
Logon as a different administrator and delete the problem user's
Temporary Internet Files directory. That has the effect of deleting
the Content.IE5\index.dat which is the only way that that file can be
completely regenerated. Actually if you had CacheSentry I think that
it could do for you too (across a boot) but otherwise you need to use a
different administrative account.
