IE 6 crash with additional error message

I'm running a Compaq XP system using IE6 because several sites I use don't
work with IE7. While I've had a typical number of IE crashes and send in
reports as per their recommendation, the problem persists. It is ALWAYS
accompanied by a second error message as follows:

IEXPLORE.EXE Application Error

The instruction at "0x7c901010" referenced
memory at "0x0000001c". The memory
could not be 'read'.

click on OK to terminate the program.

This pops up at the point after I click to send the error message. Once in
a while this same message also pops up when I'm either starting up the
computer in the morning or when I'm shutting down WINDOWS at night. But it
always pops up with the browser crash. The one additional problem is that
since the WINDOWS update which I install last Monday (12/10) or maybe Tuesday
(12/11), I am now getting the browser crash almost regularly, having to open
a new browser three times before one actually stays up. I did go to
Microsoft and follow their suggestions for checking and fixing this problem
but none of their suggestions worked.

Can anyone help?

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks Pretender. I did check out that previous post about the security
update and removing it. How do I do that?

Thanks PaBear for the info. I am reading through all the URLs to see which
ones I think I can understand well enough to try to follow the instructions.
