ICS modem control missing on client

Bill

I have Windows XP Pro on my 2 PC peer to peer wireless network. I'm using
ICS to share the web via the modem in the host. Everything on the wireless
network works fine except that recently the modem icon in Network
Connections on the client computer disappeared. I've tried everything that I
can think of to restore it. Because I don't have the icon I can't control
the modem in the host to disconnect or connect to the internet from the
client when I need to. I read an atricle that indicates the modem on the
client appears via UPnP. I followed the instructions in the Microsoft
troubleshooting article, ICS_Tshoot.doc, All the settings seem to be right.
I don't know what could stopping the modem from being detected on the
client, since the network and ICS seem to be working correctly. I have all
the critical updates installed on both PC's. Could there be an issue in one
of the recent updates causing this problem. Can someone please help me
narrow this problem down.
thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I"m not sure exactly what is happening, but here are some of the things you
might try looking at:

1) On the Client, Have you recently installed a firewall or enabled the
Internet Connection Firewall on your the XP Pro machine? Enabling a firewall
on the client can make the Internet Connection Sharing machine public
connection disappear.

2) On the Internet Connection Sharing machine, in the network connections
folder, on the advanced tab of the property pages of the modem, is the
"allow other network users to control or disable the shared connection check
box checked?

3) On the host, have you tried disabling and reenabling Internet Connection
Sharing?

4) On the client, go to the control panel (classic view), "add or remove
programs" menu, select "add / remove Windows components", and double click
on "network services" component. is the "Internet Gateway Discovery and
Control Client Enabled?"

5) On the client, Try disabling and reenabling the ad-hoc wireless
connection. Changes in media state can "re-trigger" the detection of the
Internet Connection Sharing machine.

If you are still stuck after this, please let me know.

Thanks,

Ben,
Many thanks for leading me to the soloution, In add/remove I discovered that
Universal PnP was disabled. Enabling it restored my connection on the
client. However, I don't know how it got disabled.
thanks again,
Bill

Make sure you have the "show icon in notification area when connected" box
checked in your dial-up connection properties.
