ICS Issue - - - God help me or I'll buy an apple

Hello all,

I have a huge problem with an Broadband internet
connection which I have shared over a network using ICS.
It was all working very well in the beginning but as soon
as something happened (I don't know what it was, It
could've been me or a virus or whatever) it started to
have faults in it. When I try to visit certain websites
on client computers, they just do not load. These
websites include all sorts including a number of
different encoded sites and sites with SSL etc (some
include microsoft.com, hotmail.com, I can't sign into MSN
messenger, I can't run live update, I can't do many
things! and recently apple.com and the itunes music
service has also been barred!!!). I can access some
websites however, such as google.com and such. but I can
access every single one of these barred sites on client
computers on the host ICS computer!!! It is seriously
confusing. I have consulted with a microsoft support
representative for about 2 weeks straight over email but
still, no result other than for me to buy a ethernet
modem instead of the USB one that I am currently using or
reformat the host computer. I don't really want to do
that and I don't want to spend more money on a new modem
if it is only a software problem. I desperately need a
solution as it is extremely debilitating.

Does ANYONE know of an ICS updater or re-installer or
something that can fix this problem? Or something!!!
Perhaps I need to re configure my internet connection
(although I have tried this, obviously). I am getting
fairly sick of XP Home's problems and I will buy an apple
computer if it comes time to make such a rash decision.

SO, PLEASE HELP!

Do you have good antivirus software, kept updated regularly?

Well, a broadband router/firewall is a LOT cheaper than a Macintosh, and I
think it would work a lot better than ICS anyway (I'm not an ICS fan).
Without more details of the problems you're having (can you ping the
unresponsive websites by name on the client computers?) it's hard to say
what's going on - but I'd always go with a router solution over ICS anyway.

Does the host computer share a DSL connection that uses PPP Over
Ethernet (PPPoE)? If so, here are some possible fixes. Any one of
them should solve the problem:

1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or 2 on the host computer.

2. Find the right MTU setting on the client computers, as shown here:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

and then make the setting manually on the client computers, or use
DrTCP to make it:

http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html

3. Download the free RASPPPoE program and install it on the host
computer. Use it instead of XP's PPPoE program. Details at these
sites:
