Icons on desktop won't stay put

After installing my new Media Center External drive from
Western digital, my normal arrangement of icons get
clumped together to the left of the desktop, no matter
how often I re-arrange the icons , after every reboot
they get again grouped on the left side!!
I am running Win XP-Pro
Any helps would be greatly appreciated

Try this:

Right click the Desktop | Arrange Icons By | UNCheck: Auto Arrange

Thanks for the input, but have tried everything in the
book regarding the desktop, nothing seems to work!!!
No matter what I check or uncheck!!!

Maybe your settings aren't being saved. Try this.

Go here:

Read instructions at the top.
Scroll down to:
54. Right hand side.
Click on:
Save Settings on Exit
