icons disappear from tray

I run XPSP2. Have McAfee antivirus and spamkiller. Sometimes all the normal
tray icons appear, sometimes only a few appear. It looks like all the
expected programs are runnining in taskmanager. How can I make the right
icons appear all the time?

You need to delete the following keys in the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER,
"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify",
"IconStreams"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER,
"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify",
"PastIconsStream"

Right click the Systray and select Properties,
deselect Hide Inactive Icons

Also sometimes a bad or slow startup icon could be causing the
rest of the icons not show up.
I found the USB Disconnect icon was causing the problem.
