Icon Problem

Jeff

Recently, the graphics for my icons for many programs are
now showing as the standard "windows" icon, rather than
the program it opens in (Word documents, Adobe Acrobat
documents, etc.). I went into folder options and made
sure the file associations were correct, made changes as
necessary, rebooted, and yet the same default generic
icon shows for many of my files. How do I go about
changing the icon graphic to the correct program?

Try downloading TweakUI for Windows XP, one of the Microsoft Powertoys for Windows XP at:

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

After downloading and installing TweakUI for Windows XP:

Click: Start button/All Programs/Accessories/Powertoys for Windows XP/TweakUI
for Windows XP. When TweakUI for Windows XP opens, in the left pane you'll
see Repair, click that item, then in the right pane you'll see Rebuild
Icons, click the Repair Now button. TweakUI for Windows XP has many other
VERY useful options, and is well worth having. For me it's indispensable.

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't fix the problem. Does
anyone else have any suggestions?

If it's it what I think it is...desktop icons not displaying correctly. In
start/control panel/performance and maintenance/free up space on your disk -
untick "Offline Webpages" so they don't clear when cleaning up.
Another trick is click on the affected icons and bring up those web pages
and click "shortcut to desktop" to place another icon there. Once done
delete those extra ones to recycle bin. THEN run TeakUI's "repair icons"
and it usually restores the icons to their original state..

Kelly previously posted this, which fixed the same problem for others:

Icon Cache is located here:

IconCache.db
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data

To clear and reset icon cache:

Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/Advanced. Use the item
drop box and choose Icon. Change the pixel number by one. Ok your way
out.

Thanks. I did a "detect and repair"; that seemed to fix
the problem.
