ICF/ICS

Please Help! I am having nightmares about my useless
network! Both PCs on peer to peer connection using XP
home. CAN share files and printer but not internet!
Under services in the Admin tools of the control pannel,
ICF/ICS is "started" and on automatic on both PCs. I
keep reading everywhere to disable all firewalls as this
may be the problem. The firewall on my dial up
connection is disables and so is my Norton firewall....IS
this ICF/ICS a firewall???? In any case, I have tried
stopping this service on both PCs in various ways but it
does not help the prob. I don't understand why I can't
ping the host PC but can access its files, but I can.
Have tried disabling all running commands in the msconfig
to attempt to ping host but that does not do it either.
Are there any secret firewalls out there in my hardware?
Does anyone understand this?
thanks,

Rach,

Please start by enabling ICF on the dial up connection ONLY. That is for your
protection. ICF is a better than nothing firewall that protects you when
directly connected to the internet (such as your dial up connection). Please
use it when possible.

ICF = Internet Connection Firewall (the Firewall component)
ICS = Internet Connection Sharing (the Connection Sharing component)

Please read these websites for further help about your LAN:
http://www.cablesense.com/sharing/soft1.php
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/

You start by:
1) Enable ICF (This is the Internet Firewall component) on your dial up
connection only.
2) Enable ICS (This is the Internet Sharing component) on your dial up and peer
to peer connection on main PC.
3) Setup your secondary PC as an ICS client.
4) Un install Norton firewall. At least til everything's working.

Just take it one step at a time, and you can get it all right.

Once you have internet connection working on your secondary PC, either continue
reading the websites I've listed, or come back here for further advice.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I had this problem and i had to set my IP addresses manually on my host
computer IP address 192.168.0.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on my client
computer IP address 192.168.0.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and set the
default gateway to 192.168.0.1 (the hosts IP) I done this and then on my
host pc my internet connection showed up on my network connections I then
had to rerun the network setup on my client pc and it worked ok.
Hope this helps.

Just for GP's, figured I'd mention that practicallynetworked is going to
dump a s_itload of date mining cookies onto your machine if you don't have
cookie controls. Even doubleclick has a few in the mess. I killed them
all, including prac... and all worked fine.
