Some time ago I read in one of the newsgroups that if one copied the i386
folder from the installation CD for Windows XP to the c drive, that one
could run sfc /scannow without inserting the installation CD. This used to
work until I reformatted and reinstalled XP but not now. Has anyone any idea
why?
TIA

This worked when XP was very new. I don't feel it's a good maintenance or a
good solution after the service packs and various updates have changed
countless files.

If you open Internet Explorer and click on Help> Online Help it will take
you to the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Select XP as the product you want to
ask about. Type "sfc" without the quotes and you'll get several articles
that discuss the capabilities and shortcomings of sfc with XP.
