I still can't figure out what server won't share.

I brought the Server home to connect to my P2P network. I haven't added AD
to it
yet. So now I can work on it with my home network of two w2k's.
I renamed the workgroup
to my home workgroup name. I then in order to start from scratch,
removed the file server setup and also removed the share from the data
folder making it a not share.

Then, without setting up the File Server function, I just reshared the
folder. I checked the attributes of the shared folder and it was Read Only
so I unchecked that and applied to sub-folders and files.

Strangely, when I came back to it, it was Read only again. That shouldn't
be should it??? Every time I come back to it, it is Read only. Anyway,
moving
on....

Then I right clicked My Computer, when to manage, then Local Users and
Groups
then Users and then add and added my computer name as a user.

Then on my computer I click My Network Places. I see the Server and click
on it
and see the shared folder. But, when I click on the folder, I get the old
"Access is denied"
message.

So then on the Server, I went to My Computer, C drive and then to the Folder
I am trying to share. I right click on it go to Properties and then Sharing
tab and
permissions. "Everyone" is
in there and I checked all of the boxes to allow me to change data. I click
Apply/Okay.

From my computer, I try to get inside the data folder again. Once again, I
can see the Server and the shared folder but I can't access it.

I tried restarting the Server. Once again I tried accessing the folder from
my computer with same results.

What am I doing wrong???? This is really beginning to bother me. Any help
please................

you should check the permission under security tab if you are using
NTFS

The problem was that I was using a blank as the password to log on with
the computer that was the client / user. That doesn't work. The computers
that are users on the server must log onto the network with the user name
AND a password. I used a 6 digit password and didn't bother to test just
how many real digits are required for the user to be able to connect.

And I needed to put the share folder in a folder on the c drive of the
server.
I at first just had it on the c drive so that the data folder that I was
sharing
was not in a folder. That doesn't work.

Thanks for your help!

are you using NTFS file system? right click on the drive containes the
shared folder and see.

If its NTFS, then right click on the folder then on security tab, add
the users to access the files, or just give it to everyone.

if its NTFS and you cant see the security tab, go to tools menu in
explorer, then folder option, view tab, then uncheck use simple
sharing.

Yes, it is NTFS, but as I thought I indicated, it is working now.
