I need to comfigure my keyboard to type UK keys

my keyboard is a uk one, but the charachters come out as if it were a US
keyboard, and i need to type a pound sign ito a password feild, but cannot,
and pasting has been disabled in the feild (plus it's rrrreally annoying).

i would be really gratefull if someone could tell me how to fix this.
