We dont use the config.sys file in Windows XP like we did in 9x. You can
try using compat mode as Cari suggested, or seeing if there is an update to
that particular game that will run on Windows XP natively.

i tried running the compatibility mode, as well as running
the program compatibility wizard off the start menu to no
avail. i tried copying directly the cd contents to my
hard drive and installing from there with the
compatibility mode as well. nothing doing. i checked the
site for this program, but there seems to be no XP-
specific patch or any instructions.
what do i do now? i need my buffers up by 20, it says.

thanks for your prompt responses!

Hi Sean,

X-COM:Apocalypse is a DOS game... try using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
since 95 Compatibility mode isn't working for you. (works for others).
With any method you use from this post, edit the Config.sys file and
add the following two lines to it:

buffers=20
files=20

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :)
