I dunno where to start

> so dumb <

hey, a friend of mine had a trojan on her computer, so i used her
antivirus program to remove it for her,but instead of isolating the
affected files it delted them, and programs uch as AOL wouldn't load
because a .dll file was missing, which i put back on from my computer
which is also running XP. Again when i tried to open AOL, a message
came up, this time

"the procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the
dynamic link library shlwapi.dll"

so i looked on the net trying to find how to fix this, i followed
instructions on a different forum, and i had to reboot. unfortunetly
when i rebooted it came up with:

please select the operating system to start: windows xp home or xp
setup.

xp home leads to the safe mode screen options, last known config, start
normally etc, whenever i select one of these it freezes.

If i select setup it says:

"windows could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
please reinstall a copy of the above file"

so i tried using the xp home installation disc my friend gave me, but
when i get the blue screen and hit r for repair, it says:

"File pci.sys caused an unexpected error (4096) at line 5897 in
d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c

press any key to continue"

when hit a key, it says setup failed, press any key to reboot

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how can i fix this? i have the xp home sp1 disc, and an xp pro sp2
disc, any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

thanks

Let me get this straight... You can't even get this thing going in safe mode?

Here's what I'd do...

Start your PC from scratch

Get into SETUP (BIOS) Usually a Delete command or F key. Check your option
during the post. It will tell you how to enter Setup.

Once in the BIOS, go to boot sequence

Select your CDROM to be your first bootable device. You'll do this using the
arrows.

Save your settings and exit

Shut your PC down by hitting the on/off switch

Restart your PC

Immediately insert the Windows Home Cd into your CD Rom

During the post process, your PC will ask you if you want to boot from the CD

Hit enter

Start to install Windows

When you get to the page that asks you about reformatting DO NOT DO THIS. You
will lose everything if you do

Instead, Just reinstall Windows without reformatting

Be careful to read the on-screen instructions while doing this. The
instructions are straight-forward. Relax Eat a bag of chips, and get grease all
over your keyboard!

If you decide to enter a password for Logging on, be careful to write it down.
Be careful to note whether your CAPS LOCK in on or off when you enter your
password. I usually enter right through the password process without typing
anything, because I can password later when Windows is up and active.

Good Luck Mate!
