My mother 's pc is was having issues. She took it to an "it" person, and he
couldn't do anything to pc. Windows was starting and immediately shutting
down. I put in xp disc and I amy trying to use the start from disc and
repair the copy of windows, trouble is it is now asking for product key. I
know it is a legit copy, but she moved and the product key which was with her
disc and she can't locate it. I should be able to call microsoft and get it
(I would think) I know the copy is registered with them, but how do I do
that, without having to pay??

To replace a CD or Product Key, you must contact Product Service Support. To
locate the appropriate phone number for your product, visit the following
Microsoft Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS

(The product key isn't registered with them in such a way they'd be able to
identify it for your situation. Have your credit card ready)

Like I said, I can buy a new copy for the $60 they want for the support,
that is just ridiculous

You need to get another "it" person.

If you have an XP CD, a good thing to have is another bootable CD you
can make from here:

http://www.ubcd4win.com/index.htm

Follow those instructions (XP CD required). It takes a little while,
but you will come away with a useful bootable troubleshooting CD for
just such emergencies. There are lots of useful tools included.

It includes a Keyfinder tool which will read the installation on your
HDD (assuming it is not or has not been damaged) and give you the
information you need.

There is no software to purchase.

If you do not have to buy a blank CD, the cost is: $0.

If he can't boot up the computer, how will he be able to do that?

.....ok...WHEN/IF he get's it......etc etc. These stories of "moving/
lost, "dog/ate it", "lightning struck it....TWICE!" etc. we have heard
them all so why keep trying that old shit? Just say that a serial is
needed. End of. He's in the wrong NG to ask for a "bent" serial.

You appear to be on the wrong planet.
