Hello tm,

Put some MS sites in Trusted Sites list of IE browser.
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says:

"Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser.

Retry Windows Update.

If still no joy, start on some research.
Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.

In addition to the other advice you've been given, you may also benefit from
going Start>Run and typing in cmd - then hit Enter. On the Command form that
appears, type the following:-

proxycfg -d and then hit Enter, then
proxycfg -u and hit Enter again.

Your difficulty could be caused by not having applied Service Packs 1 and 2
- number 1 at the very least.

Many thks for your help, I did try it; alas no nice, I do have both SP 1 & 2
or at least my machine told me I had downloaded them. Tim

Right click on My Computer, go to Properties and you will see on the General
tab if you have SP 2 or not. Sounds like you don't have SP 2 as you would
have remembered that install!

To boil it down simply:

Download the updates yourself, instead of using Windows Update.

If you are already running SP2, then you only need the updates since SP2
has been released.

tm :
Your log shows a whole series of 80072ee7 error exceptions. Which indicates the server name could not be resolved.
Which may possibly indicate a DNS problem, or some kind of blocking issue.
Do you have an anonimizer program/utility? What do you have in your Startup programs?

One 80072ee7 error exceptions is more than an inmate of the planet numpty
can cope with let alone a series of them, alas I have no idea what a DNS is
let alone if one has a problem with it.

I'm not sure if I have an anonimizer program/utility? But I'll have a look
but I'm playing nuclear medicine all day and will revert upon my return,
thanks for helping.

Hello Tim,
An anonimizer is a utility or program that allows anonymous access to the web by using a proxy ( using one site to log into and then access the rest of the web). You'd know it if you were using one. Those mechanisms will block the version / edition of your browser, and thus interfere with the first processes at Windows Update.

Have you already checked for parasites on this system?

Do make use of the windowsupdate newsgroup. You'll get faster answers to Windows Update issues.

It can't hurt. The folks who are most expert in windows update issues
hang out there. Go ahead, give it a shot. What can you loose?
