I Boycott Western Digital

R

RDN

I currently have a 20 Gb Seagate (system drive) and a 30 Gb Maxtor as a
backup
external enclosure drive.

Seagate tech just bought Maxtor. That sound great.
I never had a problem with Seagate or Maxtor hard drives.

But I can say I've had problems with Western Digital drives.
I've had two 1.6 Gb drives (over three years) crap out on me and one 15 Gb
drive
develop bad sectors.

I'm a very unforgiving consumer. You burn me once and I'll boycott your
products.

Had proplems with:

Intel with thier Pentiums with CPU-ID, locked CPUs. Went to AMD processors.
Linksys KVM swith. Went to D-links products
Panasonic TV. Went to Sony and Samsung.

It may be due to the fact you're an idiot - if you go from Panasonic to
Samsung, then that fact is not in dispute.

Seriously, that has to have been years ago. New technologies, new
standards, new outcomes, don't be so ****ing ignorant.

Never had a problem? The company I used to work for back in 96 had a
delivery of Seagate hard drives, the ST31276A model (1.2Gb), out of the 20
we had delivered, 18 were DOA. Faults included screaming noise on power up,
refusal to spin up, drive locking up whe FDISKing or formatting. Utter poop.
The 2.1 and slimline 2.5Gb models were no better - we stopped dealing with
them then.

Maxtor? Ask Dell. Those lovely Diamondmax slimline drives? Well, they
overheat and fail quite regularly, had one go in a backup server at work (it
wasn't the best choice of drive, it was used as a test server which was then
made live without anyone telling me), and upon dismantling the drive the
smooth surface of the disk looked like someone had been at it with a belt
sander.

Seagate drives now? Not bad at all, have used them on a few occasions in PCs
I've built, also got some as RAID in a server or two at work - let's hope
Maxtor learn from them, as Seagate seem to have improved.

Just kidding.

**** you and Western Digital.
What so great about WD drives. IBM/Hitachi make better drives.

Speaking as someone who has knowledge of Samsung monitors and TVs in all
their forms, you're talking out of your ass. Spares are expensive, and the
products are badly designed - lots of switch mode PSU failures which instead
of just killing a fuse, take out a large number of components due to a
design fault, the resulting cost usually meaning the set gets written off.

Try having some real world experience, rather than quoting reviews from
magazines.

LOLOLOL IBM/Hitachi make better drives? IBM sold their drive making
division to Hitachi because it was a liability - their "Deathstar" drives
are notorious the world over, WD on the other hand are often to be found in
servers and high-end desktop machines. So, you had problems with a couple of
old 1.6Gb drives? Throw them away, they're probably over 8 years old by now.
I've had experience of lots of drives and found WD to be the most reliable,
Maxtor quite poor, IBM/Hitachi terrible. Funnily enough, the newer Samsung
drives are quite good but the older 4.3-20gb ones had high failure rates.

You can't dismiss a product based on the fact you had one years ago that
broke, it doesn't work like that. Can't wait till your Samsung craps out :)

I'm looking at two dead Western Digitals that are barely over a year
old. Hell, I think one of my IBM 'DeathStar' replacement drives
has outlasted at least one of these Western Digitals. That's ****ing
bullshit that these drives are lasting less than 2 years. The 160 gig
is barely out of warranty. As much as it is my fault for having not
backed up whatever was lost on either of those drives - I at least
expect some reasonable sense of security with a drive that is barely
over a year old. **** Western Digital is a sentiment that I can agree
with.

These are: WD1600JB and WD1200JB by the way.....

So, you dropped unlucky - do you think WD would be branded as a premium
manufacturer if everyone's experience was the same as yours? The problem is
those who experience problems make the most noise, whilst those who have no
trouble (like myself) tend to stay quiet :)

Merry Xmas to all, by the way.....

Definitely unlucky. I've had my WD1600JB for 3 years, and not a
single problem. Sounds like you're one of the odd ones out.

That's too bad. I've had very good luck with the current batch of WD
hard drives. Fast, quiet, cool-running and reliable. And I've got well
over a terabyte worth of them running around the house. Also have quite
a few Seagates, half a dozen Samsungs and a Maxtor or two also. Haven't
had any hard drive problems for years with any of them. But don't get
me started with the earlier IBM Deskstars. Half died before 24 months.
The rest are still running (24/7) after five years.

Hi, 1.6G and 15G WD drives are all over 5 years old, thats all you should
expect from hard drives in constant use. WD has standard 5 year warranties
when bought from reseller and I find them just as reliable as Seagate or
Maxtor who both do not offer 5 year warranties.
