I also want to get rid of Messenger, but your fixes don't work.

I also don't want msn.messenger to log on to the internet and throw up two annoying screens every time I turn on my computer. I've used msconfig to shut off msnmsgr.exe and it works until I check my e-mail then it is back. I do want to use my msn e-mail, but I don't want msn.messenger at all. I just followed a WinMsgr link I got and first used the Preferences tab instructions. No good. Checked my e-mail and it came right back. I then used a registry Messenger\Client instructions. Also no good. Is there a way to go into the registry and put in a line to remove or disable the msnmsgr.exe in the startup? Well I guess my computer has msn messenger herpes. I can't get rid of it and it always comes back. Please help if you can! I'm very very frustrated here. I also run XP Home Edition.

go to www.dougknox.com and get this file
http://dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm
it will disable and remove Windows messenger from your computer. He also
has a couple of scripts that work really REALLY WELL.

I hope your answer works, but please keep in mind that I want to use my msn e-mail. I've removed Messenger completely just to put it back because it messed up my msn e-mail. I know Messenger must be there to run a lot of things. So I'm not optimistic that your solution will work. In the past I've used msconfig to shut off msnmsgr.exe and it works until I check my e-mail then it is back. I just followed a WinMsgr link and got some instructions. The first instruction used the Preferences tabs of Tools Options General SignIn. No good. Checked my e-mail and it came right back. I then used a registry Messenger\Client \PreventRun instructions. Also no good. I'll try your answer a little later. I don't want to remove messenger compleately right now to just put it back again for the second time. Right now I'm going to ask everybody on the net for help. Is there any one who can tell me how to use the registry to disable or remove the msnmsgr.exe in the startup?????????????????????????

There is also an option in Outlook Express to disable messenger on startup
of Outlook Express. It says "automatically log onto windows messenger".
Remove the check!

Suggest you go through ALL your programs and learn what is available in the
options and preferences that you can configure!

Thank you for your response. I like your AKA. I don't have Outlook Express on my computer. I got rid of it ASAP. Who knows that might be it, but I don't think so. But you know I'll look into that. If you are talking about using the Preferences tabs of Tools, Options, General, SignIn. To uncheck the "Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows" box. Been there done that. It always comes back when I check my email. That is the problem. It come back. It is my fault for not making that clear. Sorry.

Thanks again.

I have had the same problem with it turning on and running in the
background. I used the gpedit.msc in run and it slowed everything down, I
then did the registry changes to accomodate that change but could still find
my ports in ICF opened. so I used to disable/remove tool i linked you to,
and now all is fine. I have installed the windows messenger 5 and it seams
to be more complient with my demands.
I realized windows messenger is required to use some features of xp, and
that is why i now use the v5
also msmsgs.exe is the component for windows messenger and with msn
messenger it is not there.

Windows messenger has not had any effect on my email apps.
