I also don't want msn.messenger to log on to the internet and throw up two annoying screens every time I turn on my computer. I've used msconfig to shut off msnmsgr.exe and it works until I check my e-mail then it is back. I do want to use my msn e-mail, but I don't want msn.messenger at all. I just followed the WinMsgr link you gave and first used the Preferences tab instructions. No good. Checked my e-mail and it came right back. I then used the registry Messenger\Client instructions. Also no good. Is there a way to go into the registry and put in a line to remove or disable the msnmsgr.exe in the startup? Well I guess my computer has msn messenger herpes. I can't get rid of it and it always comes back. Please help if you can! I'm very very frustrated here. I also run XP Home Edition.

I disabled Messenger from Control Panel>Services, scroll down to messenger and right click, choose properties and 'Stop' Messenger if it is running then set to disabled.
You could also boot into 'Safe Mode' and delete the Messenger folder from

Start>My Computer>Program Files, scroll down to messenger and delete.

What's in "Services" is the Messenger Service, which has *NOTHING* to do with MSN Messenger
or Windows Messenger, it is the built-in networking messaging service within Windows.

He is also referring to MSN Messenger here, not Windows Messenger (which is what you propose
to "rename"). Renaming the folder also isn't a good idea because it can cause the
Whiteboard, Application Sharing, Remote Assistance and any other application that has some
sort of Messenger support (like Outlook Express) to either freeze or not work at all.

Look guys the problem is no more. A utility "Safe XP" at http://www.theorica.tk/ fixed it. Thank you both for your help. And yes Jonathan I'm sure it is not microsoft approved.

Hi JJ,

The only two things you might encounter (in Windows itself anyway) is that Remote Assistance
will no longer work and depending on what settings you have in Outlook Express, it may appear
to "freeze" when you start it (you can solve this by simply running this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg)

Other than that, everything should be normal =).

I've unchecked 'Auto logon to Win Messenger' in OE and as I say I've not had any probs yet (Hope that's not 'Famous last words'..........)
