HP scanner not working after recent xp pro patches and updates

Maybe it's just a coincidence that this 3 yr. old scanner is dying or maybe
it's not compatible with the updated xp? I've downloaded latest drivers from
HP, but I scanner still not working. It's a 4200C series usb connected type.
The scanner is seen by pc, at least it is recognized in the system/hardware
part of the control panel.
I've also been receiving errors in the system event log. stisvc not found /
takes greater than 3000 millseconds..
Does anyone have any idea?

I've had similar problems with my perfectly sound and
superb quality (2400dpi) HP5200C Scanner. Fine under
Win98...RS under WinXP Pro.

Have you checked out the HP Website? There are a
whole range of "fixes" needed for these older scanners,
including (for the 5200C at least) the download of
updated HP Scanning software (200mb mind you)to enable
these machines to work via USB with Win XP.

I've yet to solve my problems, but perhaps you may have
better luck.

In the interim I bought a Win XP compatible HP3570C (plug
& play)...hardware found...software accepted and up and
running within 5 minutes.
