HP ScanJet 4200C

I currently have an HP ScanJet 4200c that used to work on
an old computer using Windows 98SE. I now have a new
system using Windows XP and after obtaining updated
PrecisionScan software (version 2.0.3cu) and plugging my
scanner in (via USB) I consistently get a message from
the scanning software that it cannot locate my scanner.
The scanner is not listed in My Computer or the Scanners
and Cameras folder in the Control Panel. I expect that
the TWAIN source it's trying to use is the one from the
HP software. Also, the scanner does appear under Imaging
Devices in the Device Manager and there are no yellow
exclamation marks or anything in the manager. I have
contacted HP about this problem on a number of occasions
and they don't seem to have a clue, so I was wondering if
maybe there are settings I could change or elements of
Windows (such as WIA) that might be interfering. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I should mention in addition to my last response that I
have discovered a stub.log file on my C: drive that
contains the following information:
matds32.cpp -- control = NULL Identity Get - not creating
interface
Control.cpp -- CControlMsg constructor
matds32.cpp -- DAT_IDENTITY
control.cpp -- IdentityMsg
control.cpp -- MSG_GET
control.cpp -- CheckState current=3, low=3, high=7
pId->Version.Info = HP PrecisionScan LT 2.0
pId->Manufacturer = Hewlett-Packard Company
pId->ProductFamily = HP ScanJet 4200C
pId->ProductName = HP PrecisionScan LT 2.0
pId->Id = 0
matds32.cpp -- ExitInstance

I have no idea what it means but it seems like
documentation regarding a failed attempt to launch my
scanning software....
