HP DeskJet 632c With Windows XP

We just got a new laptop running the Windows XP operating system. We
had to buy a USB cable to connect our HP DeskJet 632c printer to the
laptop, since the laptop doesn't have a parallel port. The printer
doesn't work. I downloaded the "fix" from Microsoft
(630-enu-xpinfu.exe), and followed the instructions very carefully.
Still, when I try to print a test page or to print from WordPad, it
doesn't print. At best, the printer "acts" like it's going to print
(the typical "adjustments" and noises); but then the yellow light
starts flashing. When I press the yellow-light button, nothing
happens. I've tried removing the printer (via "Printers and Faxes" in
"Control Pane"), then adding it again. I've done this several times.
The printer shows that it's been installed; but it doesn't work. I've
also tried the Troubleshooter option in the "Help and Support Center";
but it didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions?
