How do I retrieve a data file copied on cd, edit and re-
save it back on the cd? I get error when applying un-
checked Read-Only attribute.

Hi!
CDs are, by their nature, read-only file systems, because
once a file is burned onto a CD, that file cannot be
deleted, renamed or changed. So, as files are copied onto
the CD, each file has an attribute that is changed to
reflect the fact that the file is read-only.

When you copy these files back onto your hard drive, they
remain read-only because Windows doesn't change this
attribute even though the file now resides on a file system
where changes are possible. To remedy this, you have to
change the file attribute manually to remove the read-only
attribute.

If the CD is formatted for packet writing, such as DirectCD, it is just like
a floppy or hard drive.

Copy to hard disk. There right click on it, take Properties, Uncheck
the Read Only box and Apply. Do the editing, burn to the CD.

Note that the inbuilt burning is like a pressed CD or a burn using a
program like Easy CD Creator - it will not overwrite the old copy, but
add a new one in a new 'session' and where there are two files of
identical names it is the one in the most recent session that is seen
subsequently. Also note that each session has an overhead of about 14MB
- so save up enough files to be worth while before Writing to CD
