"Read only" attribute won't change

Dan Schaffer

Hi,

I recently copied some data files (mainly MS Word) from my partition for
data to my partition for backup. When I later tried to copy them back to the
partition for data, Win XP Pro SP1 told me that it couldn't copy them
because they were read only.

I right-clicked on the folder I wanted to copy from the backup partition,
went to "properties" and unchecked "read-only". I clicked on "apply", and
then checked the box for applying this change of attribute to all underlying
folders and files. But it didn't work. The folder and the files in it are
still "read only"

I had also copied these data files to a CD-R. I copied them from the CD-R to
my partition for data. But they are read-only there, and, once again, that
attribute won't change. (I'm used to files saved to a CD-R being "read only"
when they are copied back to a hard disk, but in the past I could change
that).

I'd be grateful for advice.

Hi,

"Read only" on a folder is ignored by the system, you should ignore it as
well. That attribute only applies to files.
