How To Recover FOUND.000 Files

R

Richard In Va.

I have a Compact Flash (512MB, CF-II) card I use in my camera (FAT16). Due
to it's size, I also use it to transport files between work and home.
Recently, something happened that caused some of the files to become
corrupt. The work files I keep copies at both locations, so I'm not too
concerned about those. However, some recent photos I've not been able to
copy to my PC. The camera would find and preview the pictures fine, but
Windows Explorer would not find them.

I ran the XP Error-Checking utility, it created a Found.000 hidden folder
and filled it with "CHK" files. I then ran Norton 2005 Disk Doctor with no
luck.

It's been a long time since I've dealt with chk files.

Could someone tell me how I might recover the 12 or so Birthday Party
pictures?
I'm pretty much dead meat if I don't save the pictures.

Thanks for any help!

What is the file format that the camera uses when it saves the files
to the flash card?

Your best bet would be to copy the .CHK files to your computer and
then rename them to the same file extension that the camera files
normally have. Then see if anything will open them.

Does the camera still preview the pictures okay or not? If so does
your camera have any functions to edit the pictures in any way with
the camera? If you can make a change, however slight, in the picture
using the camera then that should cause the image to be saved again to
the memory card, and this time it might be readable.

Good luck

Hello Ron,

The Nikon Coolpix saves the pictures as jpeg or jpg.

The number of CHK files are numerous, maybe 75-100 due to other non-image files becoming
corrupt as well. The Windows XP Error-Check utility stuck all CHK files into the same
folder.

Yea, I know... keeps getting worse.

The Camera now says that there are no images on the CF card to preview.

The camera copies the image to the CF card as soon as the picture is taken. How the
camera was able to view or preview the pictures being corrupted (as far a XP was
concerned) is beyond me.

I'll try to rename all the files tomorrow to see what happens.

Thanks for your help!

I'll post back with what I find.

If I recall properly, the chk files created are pieces of files. More than
one chk file goes into the original file and you would have to know how to
concatenate the files.

What sizes are these chk files ? Probably they are only fragments of the
original files.
