If they're *.chk files, there's probably not much left to them. You could
try but other than a few short snippets of text I've never been able to use
anything recovered from them.

Hi Alain,

Thanks for your posting. These files are result of running chkdsk. When the
file is recovered, it will be placed in a directory called FOUND.000. The
first file recovered will have the name FILE0000.CHK, the second file will
be named FILE0001.CHK, etc. You may be able to rename the recovered files
and copy them back to the appropriate directory.

Please feel free to let us know if anything is unclear or if you need
further assistance.

Sincerely,

William Wang

Hello William,

Thank you for your response but how to know the corresponding extension of
more than 11.000 chk files ?!

I know it's all the profile data that WinXP has "dropped" after the system
has hung but how to recover from these chk files Word, Excel and Outlook
documents ?

Hi Alain,

Thanks for your update. If you have determined that you have lost some word
documents, you can open Word and then open each file to see if it is what
you want. If it is, please rename it and copy it back to a safe location.
You can also rename each file to abc.doc or abc.xls (the extension depends
on what you're looking for) and see if it can be opened.

If the above method doesn't work, the only option for this type of recovery
is to contact a data recovery specialist as Microsoft does not provide any
tools or recovery services.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Sincerely,

William Wang

I'm not sure you understand me.

How can I open more than 11,000 chk small files with Word or Excel ???

How can I restore all the data with theses fragments of files ?

Hi Alain,

Thanks for your update. I assume there are only 11 files as I see "11.000
chk files" in your previous post. Now I understand it's 11,000.

I found no other solutions on how to recover the chkdsk files. In fact, the
chkdsk files only save disk fragments but not the lost files. In case
you've determined that you have lost some very important files, you may
want to contact some data recovery company to restore the fragments to
files using specific tools. This is a complicated task.

If there are any further concerns on this specific issue, please feel free
to let me know.

Sincerely,

Hi Alain,

There are also some third-party softwares that may be able to help you to
recover some lost files. For example, the EasyRecovery is a good tool.

Hi Alain,

If the important data is lost, it's best to engage some data recovery
vendor to restore the fragments to files as Microsoft doesn't provide any
data recovery services or tools. However, I'd like to be here to assist
should you have any further enquiries. If we can be of any assistance,
please don't hesitate to let us know.

Sincerely,

William Wang
