How To Disable Microsoft CD Player; AutoRun Registry Value; CD-ROM

I have Windows 2000 Professional on this PC, with Service Pack 4.

Today I wanted to take care of a problem that's been annoying us here for a
while: Although we never want to PLAY audio CDs on this PC (we have an
audio system for that, duh), whenever we insert an audio CD into this PC's
CD-ROM drive, in order to back-up that CD, the Microsoft CD Player program
starts.

I discovered some months ago that, apparently thanks to the user interface
geniuses at Microsoft, Microsoft CD Player DOES NOT allow you to disable
the CD Player program from automatically starting whenever an audio CD is
placed into the CD-ROM drive.

Today I found out how to do this, and I'll describe the solution below.

But first, the solution is NOT the one described in Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article 155217, namely:

* Start the Registry Editor. That is, Select "Start/ Run", type "regedit";
then press Enter.

* Locate the registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet
\Services\CDRom".

* To disable automatically running CD-ROMs, change the "Autorun" value to 0
(zero).

* Restart the PC.

Instead, the solution IS as described in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
319287 (this Knowledge Base Article is apparently not yet published, as of
today anyway). Namely:

* Start the Registry Editor. That is, Select "Start/ Run", type "regedit";
then press Enter.

* Locate the registry key: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun".

* To disable automatically running CD-ROMs, change the
"NoDriveTypeAutorun" value to b5 (this is a Hexadecimal value, and is
usually designated "0xb5").

* Restart the PC.

By the way, I was not even able to delete the CD Player program by deleting
the file "cdplayer.exe" from the 2 directories where this file is located
on my PC: "C:\WINNT\system32" and "C:$WIN_NT$.~LS\I386". The file would
simply reappear, at the location "C:\WINNT\system32".

And it's not possible to remove the Microsoft CD Player program by
selecting "Control Panel/ Settings", then "Add/Remove Programs" or
"Add/Remove Windows Components"; CD Player is not listed in either
location.

Dear Microsoft: Would you please make more sense than this.

In addition to NoDriveTypeAutorun, tip 2316 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at
http://www.jsiinc.com use tip 2274 to
change the
MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7
to
MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,,7

in Sysoc.inf and then use Add/Remove Windows Components
to uncheck Media Player.
