Hi,

Recently i bought a canon ip3000, it works great. I would like to know
how to conserv ink on this printer. After printing for ~800 pages (most
in black) it reports that its running low on black ink. Is this the
best this printer can perform? Any suggestion or links would be
helpful.

The estimated yield for the black cartridge (6BK) for this printer is 750 pages
at 5% coverage if I remember correctly.
I suspect you are doing well to get 800 pages.

If cost is an issue you can refill your own cartridges. Your cartridge
type is probably the easiest to refill. I've been using black bulk ink
in my best printer (IP5000) for over a year. Perfect text printing, no
clogs and no worries about ink usage. My cost is about one dollar to
refill the cartridge that's reading low for you right now. Text results
are on a par with Canon's black ink (make sure it's pigmented black for
your cartridge type).

If you're printing a lot of text, try using the draft mode. These printers
work very well in draft, and very fast..

That seems pretty good to me. You can print in draft mode if that is
suitable for your needs. Reducing the amount of ink is fine for a lot of
text uses, such as printing out directions to your vacation spot, but when
you get to serious use like a presentation, your resume, or photos for the
family history, the few pennies for ink becomes insignificant.

The ip3000 has no bci-6 black, it has the bci-3e black. While 750, or
rather 740 pages was done using the 1500character patern, at 5% yield
the page count is about 500p.

But I agree, 800 pages is above and beyond what I get out of mine. I
get a new cartridge ready when I finish a ream of paper.

Oops, typo I'm afraid. thanks for the correction.

As i had clearly said its __~800__ (~ symbol says the value is
approximate). I didn't count the no. of pages it had printed. 800 is an
approx. value only. Could 750 also, i am not sure.

how do i do that? AFAIK canon ip3000 has 4 ink tanks. one each for
black, cyan, magenta, yellow. Now what printer is reporting is black
ink tank is empty. Now how do refill blank ink tank alone. If i refill
the black ink will this affect the printer.

thanks

UMM, fast maybe but I don't know about "work well"
in draft mode. My iP4000 prints pretty light in
draft mode. In contrast my hp970 in draft mode is
nearly as black as in normal mode and way more
readable than the iP4000 in draft mode. I would
never select draft mode for my iP4000, but then I
don't have to because filling the cartridges is so
easy and cheap.

The tanks are individual and you replace or refill
them individually as needed. You don't have to
replace the complete set when one tank get near empty.

There are lots of places that sell ink and provide
instructions for refilling. It might seem
complicated at first, but after you have done it
once, it will be simple. Here is one place that
has a pretty good reputation and has instructions.

IT WOULD BE NICE TO FIND A REPUTABLE FULL DISCLOSURE PLACE.

NEITHER DO I AND I USE OEM SO I DO NOT HAVE TO ENDURE THE MESSY PAIN OF
REFILLING WITH A SUBSTANCE WHERE I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS.

Yes, your value was approximate... canon's value is "740p" assuming
1500 character test patern at 10cpi courier font. It's an old dot
matrix testing technique that hardly applied to dot matrix printers of
the day as that/s 1/3 of the page. 500p is a very realistic estimate
and given the cost of the bci-3e it's dang reasonable.

Oh, duplex mode might actually extend your page count as it uses the
color to make the black. The black ink in the printer simply put
bleeds though the paper to a degree. I don't use it my self as I
prefer the high contrast black and don't mind mild bleeding, but it's
an option, one which would likely increase your print costs be possibly
extend your print range.

Same here with ip3000. Cartriges are pretty cheap (in comparision to
laser printers). But i am a student & depend on my father for the
source of money hence the need to find way to cartrige last longer
b'cos i use the printer a lot. Draft mode sucks

There is Hobbicolors. And don't forget, OEM doesn't disclose, so there is
no real reason aftermarket needs to if OEM doesn't.

That is your personal choice. There is no general reason others should
not.

Like OEM, there are reputable aftermarket resellers that sell quality ink
that will work perfectly well for most users, and refilling is usually not
messy at all. And id you are talking of not knowing what something is, you
don't know the OEM formualtion either.
