Empty color cartridge prevents black printing

Printer: Epson CX9400FAX.
I was very low on magenta and yellow ink.
I set the printer driver/properties to use black ink only to print. I printed about 50 pages,
and my black ink ran out. So I replaced it with a new T069 black cartridge and continued.
After about 20 more pages, my magenta AND yellow ink ran out!
I just need to do black printing, and I have enough black ink, but this printer will not print
anything if ANY cartridge runs out of ink

How did my color ink cartridges run out when my printer was only supposed to use the
black ink cartridge?
Are there any inkjet multifunction printers that will continue to scan/fax/print even if one
color cartridge runs out?

use the ssc programme to reset the cartridges and see if that works

Well, if you print with emptied ink then you have a big chance to fire the
printer head. IOW, the printer head may get overheat and burn, and you will
have something to blame to

BLACK doesn't always using BLACK ink *unless* it's 100% blackest. Because
there always some greyscale level and greyscale level is the mixture of
different color.

IOW, sometime you may not see the greyscale, but if you ZOOM IN the image
then you will see plenty of greyscape, even greyscale around the EDGE of the
blackest.

Here is your answer. Google for refillable ink cartridges and learn to
refill your own ink then you won't have to worry about buying expensive OEM
ink.

It usually cost around $16-20 for (6) refillable ink cartridges set with
ARC (Auto Reset Chip), and around $20 for (6) 6oz ink bottles
