how to connect windows 2000 machines to domain

N

Naresh

I recently installed win 2000 server. This is a new pdc
for our newly set up network.

I am able to connect win98 and win xp prof machines to the
domain but not the win 2000 prof machines.

I gave DHCP.

I am able to ping from both sides.
May be i am missing a step like delegate control, but even
after giving delegate control i am having the same problem.
there is something else fishy ??

Somebody can help me on this.

Thanks.

Naresh,

Is the DHCP Server dishing out the correct 'additional' information ( such
as WINS/DNS information )? Remember, you need to make sure that all of your
WIN2000 + systems point to your Internal DNS Servers only.

Also, is this just one WIN2000 system where you are having problems or
several? It could be a hardware issue possibly if it is just one. Make
sure that the NIC is found, the drivers are loaded, the cable is good going
from the NIC to the wall port as well as from the patch panel to the port on
the switch and that the port on the switch is working. A good test is to
try a known good port. Do you have any management software for the Switch
so that you can verify.

This is a start.

What happens when you connect 2000 machines to the domain? (my computer /
properties / network ID?

Do you have DNS and AD running?, Are you using an account with the right
permissions?

Cary:
Thanks for replying.
The hardware on the client is good. since the server is
able to ping the client.

All i did was install win2000 server, run dcpromo and
installed DHCP (new scope)like (192.168.1.1) to (.100) .

The same machine is hosting DNS and WINS. This server is
not connected to internet yet. Therfore no router yet. And
NO ISP DNS involved.

Do i need to assign any DNS,WINS settings ?? if yes how
and where ??

The DHCP is NOT dishing out Wins and DNS info. may be this
is the problem. can you help me how to resolve this.

The patch panel and switch are good.

Where i am having trouble is, when i go to network
properties and ask the win 2000 client to join a domain,
there is a dialog box asking for permission to join the
domain, where we usually type
administrator/password/domain name.
As i hit enter with all the correct info, it tries to get
permission and bombs out right there and a msgbox pops up
saying path not found.

I feel this a permission or control problem.

any clue on this.

naresh

You need to use DHCP to assign the DNS and (optionally) the gateway
addresses. You do it by setting the DHCP options for the scope. DNS on
your clients *MUST* point to the *internal* DNS. It should NOT point
to the ISP. Could you post the results of an "ipconfig /all" command?

Cheers,

Cliff

Thanks for the help, Cliff.

I sent Naresh an e-mail ( as he e-mailed me directly ) and informed him of
essentially the same thing. It is good to see that others are suggesting
the same thing that I am! ;-) I have not heard from him so I am hoping that
it is fixed now.

Thanks,

Cary

Cliff/Cary:

Thxs guys for your help. it works now.

But the way Cary , your email did not reach me
([email protected])?
What i was doing was. On the server i did not give any DNS
address.
Now i gave DNS IP's to the servers and it started working.

But one thing i do not understand is
on the server dns says 127.0.0.1

But on client: DNS says 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.0
and wins. any clue
I am attaching the ipconfig from client & server.

Am i doing anything wrong here..
