The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted

Oscar Martinez

I have two servers running windows 2000, one acting as the
PDC and the other as BCD. I am having problems with the
active directory. all existing users and computers account
are working fine but when I try to add new computers or
users to the domain this is the messege i got "The
specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted"

I have read most of the articles related to this problem
but none of them have giving me the solution to the
problem i have.

According to what i have checked the bdc is pretending the
be the pdc because when i shut down the bcd i cannot logon
in the the domain and also i cannot delegate control the
pdc beacuse the bdc can't see the pdc

Note: I hope you understand when i pretent to explain. I
am not native english speaker. Thanks

Are you using lmhost files and are they up to date?

Can you ping the PDC/DC by using its host name AS WELL as by it
netbios name?

The domain you are trying to join, is it a NetBIOS domain (old N
domain) or is it a Windows 2000 Domain? If it is the former, you coul
try installing NetBEUI. If the latter, check your host file and DNS.

Check that when you ping the DC if the Ip address is correct. You nam
resolution might be wrong. Make sure the domain name is appended to th
host name.
