Peggy purple hat

When I hold down shift and use the hyphen key to make a short line,
autoformat makes it a line across the page.
THEN I cannot get rid of that line.

The AutoFormat converts your line into a paragraph border. To remove it, you
have to select the paragraph above the border and use the Borders and
Shading dialog to select None.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm.
