How to add a live.com email account to Windows Mail?

I have been unable to add my live.com e-mail account to my Vista Windows Mail.

No matter what I try, I keep getting an error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'live', Server:
'pop.live.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error:
10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I need advice on how to set up this account, please!

Do I go with pop.mail.live.com/smtp.mail.live.com, or
pop.live.com/smtp.live.com?

What security settings must be checked?

Please advise me how to do this.

I was prompted to make Windows Mail my default e-mail program, which is what
I wanted to do. But will it use my live.com e-mail address even when it is
not added?

Thank you.

Try out these settings . . . . .

Live.com Settings:

Server names and ports:
POP3 = pop3.live.com Port = 995
SMTP = smtp.live.com Port = 587

Checkboxes you need to check include:

Server Tab: "My server requires authentication" (Click "Settings" button
also and fill in "Log on Using" email address - *** but do NOT check the
checkboxes there . . . .)

Advanced Tab: BOTH outgoing and incoming - "This server requires a secure
connection (SSL)"

General Tab (if desired but generally recommended): "Include this account
when receiving mail or synchronizing"

Should work - if you get errors post the entire error message (cut-n-paste)
for further assistance.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

I finally got it right, after many failures, simply because I did not follow
your very clear directions to the letter!

Other readers, please note: the Settings function on the Server tab asks for
a username. Your full e-mail address is required, not just your (user)name!

Thank you so much.

@ Vista Rookie,

Thank you for your response. I found your explanation of the function of an
e-mail client rather helpful.

Wrong POP3 server name. "slk759" gave you the correct server name
(pop3.live.com).

Whether the mail server login requires your complete email address
or just the username portion depends on how your provider has it
set up on his server. So you can't make a hard and fast rule.

True point for "Learner" to be aware of if they're still following. I
believe all of the @live setups require the full email address though. I
don't know about the other hotmail types but my guess is that they would be
the same. My ISP however requires that field be completed with only the
username part (Verizon).

Thanks once again for the responses here.

It was my first inquiry in this discussion group, and I want to express my
appreciation to all of you who are so generously of service to others.

Thanks,

Learner.
