How show jpg in desktop background selection window?

P

Peter Wilkins

I used to be able to rightclick the desktop, select properties then
the desktop tab and chose my background image from a selection, which
included bmp and jpg files stored in my windows/web/wallpaper folder.

Now, only bmp images display in the window, plus the one jpg that is
the active background. None of the other jpg files display, although
I can set them or any other jpg image as a background from within
windows explorer by rightclicking on the thumbnail and selecting "set
as desktop background". This only works if the view is set to
filmstrip or thumbnail - not if it is icons, list or details.

I've searched the help and KB but they all assume that bmp and jpg
will display. I've changed file associations until I am blue in the
face, but it made no difference.

Is there any way I can get jpg's to re-display in the Display
Properties/Desktop/background list?

TIA

As Wesley said. In addition check and remove the NoHTMLWallPaper policy in these registry keys:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop

Thanks Wesley,
I have all the files as confirmed by looking in Windows Explorer -
it's just that only the bmp ones list in Display Properties | Desktop
tab | Background - the jpg ones don't list there as they used to do.

Thanks Ramesh,
but I already have all the files mentioned by Wesley, as confirmed by
looking in Windows Explorer - it's just that only the bmp ones list in
Display Properties | Desktop tab | Background - the jpg ones don't
list there as they used to do.

And when I checked the registry, I did not find any ActiveDesktop
listing under HKCU\ or HKLM\
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
and no NoHTMLWallPaper policy entry anywhere else either - I searched
the whole registry.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I've found the problem.
The ability to add web content to the desktop had somehow been
disabled - I ticked that box in TweakUI and everything is back to
normal

Peter,

Next, check for the NoActiveDesktop policy here:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Exactly! That equals my previous advice regarding "NoActiveDesktop".

Thanks - If I had waited a few minutes I would have got it - our posts
crossed in the aether - but your first post gave me the clue anyway!

Ramesh,

You busy fellow! I spent an hour researching registry keys that might be
related. No joy. I even looked here >>>

Index of Windows XP Tips
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Tips_Page.htm

You've come through again. :)

I had a problem way back. I did not have...

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button |
Web tab

Or....

Right click Desktop | Arrange Icons By | Show Desktop Icons

TweakUI strikes again.

If this is unchecked:
TweakUI
[+] Explorer
Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
[[If this is unchecked then the ability to add Web Content to the desktop
will be disabled.]]

Also...

You will *not* see the Web tab or Show Desktop Icons.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
NoActiveDesktop
REG_DWORD
0 = Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
1 = Don't allow Web content to be added to the desktop

And, apparently...
*.jpg files will not be listed in...
Display Properties | Desktop tab | Background

Hi Wes,

I've added the info now (last tip) :)

Similar thread here: I really liked it. Hope you'll, too. During that process I came to know about the NoCustomizeThisFolder policy documented nowhere at MS site: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&[email protected]

Howdy Ramesh,

Display Properties Desktop background tab lists only BMP files
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/jpgbackground.htm

Has been added to my measly little Desktop Background.txt file. :)

I discovered the TweakUI Right click Desktop | Arrange Icons By | Show
Desktop Icons by accident. I could not figure out why I did not have Show
Desktop Icons.

Everyone was posting to select this. And I didn't have it. Beware what you
do using TweakUI.

Thanks Wes. For the "show destop icons" issue,
