How set permissions for ONE other PC?

I'm using WinXP-pro, and need to share my entire folder (George Jones) on
PC"George" to allow PC"Family" to fully access it.

It's a small network, behind a firewall DSL router. (I don't think security
is a big issue, but would like to know if it is.) Could someone help with
setting permissions. I'm almost there, here's what was done so far:

1) Control Panel > Folder Options > View > [Disabled] simple file sharing.
(This causes a security tab to appear in next step...)

2) Windows Explorer > rt clicked on folder c:\George Jones > Properites >
Security > Add...

Here's where problem comes in... I try to add the PC named "Family" but it
says "object not found". I can add "Everyone" and this DOES WORK, but I
don't want...it's way too opened up.

I tried Advanced > Find Now > (it lists lots of "George" things but nothing
else...no FAMILY in the list.

What am I doing wrong?

3) To complete the sharing, do I need to ALSO do...
Windows Explorer > rt click on folder c:\George Jones > Properites >
SHARING > (o) Share this folder?

I answered your other post before reading this one so hopefully
this information will be helpful.

First off, you don't want to share the entire contents of that
folder. Limit the sharing to your My Documents folder and/or
data folders you created.

Next, since you've already disabled Simple File Sharing, you
need to add user accounts on your PC that are identical in user
name and password to the accounts on Family that you want to
allow access. You would then add those accounts on the Security
page of the folders Properties. Keep in mind you're sharing the
folder with users not computers.

I have a similar problem and have been going nuts trying to resolve it.

I have since removed the Win 98se system from the network.

I have just added SP 2 to the XP Pro unit and it changed nothing.

I can still see both units the XP Pro and the XP Media, but I still can
not access the XP Pro from the XP Media unit.

I can see and access both units from the XP Pro ?

I removed the bridge and both unit have only a Locl Area Connectiion and
they have no problem accessing the internet.

Can you think of anything I'm missing?

Thanks, still not entirely clear, wondered if could ask for a few clarifies.

1) On adding user accounts...can I just establish a Guest Account on each
PC, with no password, and use that

2) Isn't there any way to do this without adding a user account. In old
days, with Win98, all I did was turn on file sharing, and regardless of the
folder (no special, forbidden folders), it shared to whomever, fast and
easy.

3) On not sharing the entire "George Jones" folder, I actually would like to
share even more...and share the entire "C-drive". What I really need to do
is go to "Family" PC, and access the "George" PC (after sharing "C"), so I
can "copy" the entire c-drive contents into a folder (let's call it
c:\GeorgeBackup\ ___) as a total backup. I've got some Windows PC
problems, my backup tape unit quit working properly also, and I need a
*full* mirror image of George c-drive put onto another hard drive. That
way, (after reformatting my hard drive, and re-installing Win and apps), I
can look at data files and anything else I want, and copy data plus see how
things looked (like desktop, folder structure, etc.) and how things were
configured. I know it's not precision and following rules, but sort of got
no choice...I need a flash copy of my c-drive. Would there be any grave
problem with sharing the c-drive long enough to do this?

1 and 2. If you don't want to add user accounts then you should
turn Simple File Sharing back on. With SFS in place all users
logged on to Family would have access to the shared resources
on your computer. Windows actually uses the Guest account as
part of this process. This is as close to the Windows 98
version of file sharing as you're going to get.

Note: Before you restore Simple File Sharing you need to
unshare any folders that you are currently sharing. Once you've
restored SFS, you can go back and recreate whatever shares you
want. If you skip this step the shares you created while SFS
was disabled will not be accessible.

3. Under the those circumstances, no problem. My earlier answer
was based on taking a long term view. You don't want to allow
access to system folders on your PC unless there is a
compelling reason.

Keep in mind that you're probably going to have to configure
any software firewalls that are installed on your PC, the built
in XP firewall being the usual suspect, to allow File and
Printer sharing on your LAN. You might also have to configure
the firewall on your router to allow this. Make sure you're
only allowing access on your local network.

Post back if you get stuck on any of this stuff.

Another thing to remember is that whenever you create shared
folders or change the permissions on existing shares any user
logged on to other machines on the network will need to log off
and log back on in order to access the shared resources.

Is Simple File Sharing enabled on the XP Pro PC?
Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Folder Options and click on the
View tab.
At the bottom of the "Advanced Settings" box, make sure there's
a check mark next to "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)".
If SFS is disabled, you have to create accounts on the Pro
machine that are identical in user name and password to the
accounts that exist on the other machines on your network. If
you have to restore SFS, stop sharing any folders that you're
currently sharing and recreate the shares. Also, log off and
log back on to the other PC's on your network.

Next, check the Windows XP built-in firewall and make sure that
File and Printer Sharing has been added on the Exceptions page.
If you are using any third party firewalls make sure that they
are configured to allow access from within your LAN.

If this isn't the source of your problem, post back with
details concerning how your network is configured. Include
details concerning all PC's and how they are connected. Make
and model # of any networking hardware would be helpful as
well.
