how is Mwave.com for service and reliability?

AndrewJ

I've used Mwave quite a bit and find their inventory, prices, and service to
be excellent. A friend who also buys lots of computer parts likes them as
well. I purchased my motherboard bundle to build this new system from them,
but in a recent purchase of a new printer and HD I went elsewhere because of
the total price including shipping. Although their prices are about as low
as they get, I think they profiteer on shipping a bit, as their shipping
charges often seem high.

I have had the same favorable experiences with Newegg, and their prices can
be lower considering many of the items they offer have free Fed-Ex Express
Saver shipping. Mwave's shipping can be a bit steep, even via ground, and
when I order I check both and buy from the one offering the best net price.
They're both top-drawer IMO.

Almost 8/10 online shopping carts are abandoned due to outragous
shipping charges.

Watch those shipping charges, though!

Yeah I see what you mean! BTW the item has just increased in price there and
shipping is a whopping $15.00, newegg and zipzoomfly has free 2 day shipping
on the same item.

IMO, whichever of the two has the lowest net price including shipping is the
one to go with. Both have excellent records with me, and the last time I
looked at www.resellerratings.com my experience isn't unusual.

I placed my last order with Newegg because I saved about $20 after the
shipping charge even though Mwave's basic price for each item was lower.
What gripes me about Mwave is that they are charging much more for shipping
than it costs them, which is a practice I find irritating. Just give me the
price you want for the item and don't try to sneak in extra charges for
shipping, thank you very much.

What was weird about this Newegg order was that a $600 printer (heavy) and a
$125 HD both had free shipping, but they charged me $4 to ship a $2.99 USB
cable that was included in the same box as the HD.

I bought two items from them also, one was free 2nd day air, the other super
saver, got them both free 2nd day air. Newegg screws up sometimes but
usually pretty good customer service.

Zipzoomfly is also good, lot of free 2nd day air.

I'm going to be ordering computer parts this weekend, and have used
NewEgg in the past, but like the layout of Mwave. Has anyone had any
bad luck with them. I'd rather buy online with someone that doesn't
charge tax, or extreme shipping fees. Looking at getting a
motherboard, memory, and processor.

Thanks
JIm

I purchased an AMD processor, ASUS MB and Kingston memory from MWave in
2001. They tested this combo for $9.00. Everything arrived on time and
worked from day one. I highly recommend MWave.

Hey Jim,

There's some interesting feedback on mwave.com here:

I've never used them, but have always had good newegg experiences.

I've purchased from Mwave at least 2 dozen times and I'm 100% happy.
Many packages are due in three days and arrive in two, even though I'm
on the other side of the country. Many orders are shipped within a few
hours. BTW that has -never- happened with newegg. As far as the
complaints go on that site it could be competitors making up stuff.
One guy says about a restocking fee. 6 weeks ago I oredered the wrong
RAM. I felt really dumb but noticed at their site they -didn't charge-
a restocking fee and credited me with the full amount. I know some
complaints about them might be true but I have bad luck and they are
always great with me.

That's a good reminder to consider all merchant feedback with a measure
of healthy skepticism.

It should be illegal to charge for testing brand new items. One should
expect them to be perfect and not need testing. What BS.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it should be illegal. But they only
charge $9 for the test. That makes me wonder. If the "test" is done
properly, it should take several hours minimum. Also, if someone is truly
qualified (through education and experience) to professionally test new
computer components, they should be earning a MINIMUM of $30 to $40 per hour
(probably higher). So if you've got someone earning at least $30 per hour
working for several hours, and the vendor is charging you $9 for that
service, something doesn't add up there. Granted, probably one person can
multi-task and test several computers at once. It still doesn't come CLOSE
to adding up mathematically, though. -Dave

Nonsense!

From mwave.com FAQ:

"Assembly and testing option includes installation of memory, processor,
and cooling fan. CPU settings will be set, and inital boot will be
performed."

If you know of a company that would pay me 40$/per hour to waste half a day

then I am most definately interested!!

Oh, well if that is all the test is, then it's not even worth $9. In fact,
I'd pay mwave $9 NOT to do it. Simply booting a system once tells you
nothing about how reliable the system will be, other than the fact that it
displays the bios splash screen briefly. Also, if this is done in a hurried
fashion (as it is likely to be done), there is a remote possibility that
this test could actually damage delicate (and vital) components. Probably
better to skip the test. IMHO -Dave

If they are selling you a complete computer shouldn't they test it before
sending it to you?

Total BS.

Dashi

I don't know. I've ordered a complete computer system (in pieces) from
mwave several times. I'd prefer they NOT test it for me. But then I
probably know more about computers than anyone working at a computer vendor
like mwave. It's possible to order complete systems from mwave. I'd
imagine most mwave customers don't do that, though. If you find your way to
mwave, you probably aren't looking for a complete system. -Dave

These are component purchases, not a 'complete computer' purchase. When
you purchase your choice of MB, processor and memory, for a mere $9,
MWave will assemble these components, configure the processor switches
and will boot them to make sure there are no problems. This is a simple
task but it lessens the chance of a return due to incompatibility issues,
defective processor, MB, memory, etc, etc. It is not imperative to
purchase this test but when you spend hundreds of dollars for components,
spending $9 to make sure that they are compatible and are not defective,
is not a big deal.

Perhaps it is time to put this thread to bed. :)

Oh, well if that is all the test is, then it's not even worth $9.

TigerDirect built their entire business selling many barebones
packages they knew would never run. So from that crap springs an
entire new service that for $9 really looks like a bargain.

I agree, I don't need the testing and certainly wouldn't pay extra for it.

But if I was buying a complete assembled system, (which I won't) I would
expect it to work upon being plugged in. Wouldn't you?
