How do you disassociate incoming messages from sub-folders?

(Vista Home Premium). Until a few days ago my incoming messages were listed
in my inbox in simple date order of receipt -- fine. Suddenly something has
changed and as messages come in they are immediately associated with previous
messages, apparently by subject, in what I guess are called sub-folders.
It's thus very easy to miss them. How do I revert to the simple date order
display? I'd be grateful for any advice.
