How do I stop the links on my website from directing users to my h

Can anyone help? I've just published my frontpage website
(www.originsnowsports.co.uk) but the links on my second page are all directed
to files on my hard drive - e.g
file:///C:/documents....my2%20documents....etc. - so they do not work. Can
anyone tell me how to resolve this? I don't understand why 2 of my pages work
but the others don't. Thanks

2 possiblities:

1) You did not have a web created and open when you did the page. You did a
single page only.

2) You did not import the images into your open web before inserting on the
page and saving.

You must have a web site created, and you must file | Open Site to
add/create/change pages.

Thanks for this Tom. I created the pages within the website as far as i'm
aware and I don't think it's to do with images as the links that are not
working are simply hyperlinks in the text. I saved the 2 pages that do open
in the same place and the same way as the other pages which is why I am so
confused.

The links to the images are not working. They are pointing to a file on
your hard drive.

You did not have a web created and/or open when you did the page.

You did not import your images from their location on your hard drive into
your images folder in your open web before you inserted them on a page and
saved them.

I understand what you are saying Tom but the links are not images. They are
hyperlinks in the text to other files??

If the website was not open when I created the pages what is the solution?
I really appreciate your help and sorry if I'm being really stupid here but
I don't get the thing about images.

I know about your text links. I am *also* talking about the images on that
page. They do not appear. Same problem!!!!! They are pointing to your
local hard drive.

I've just managed to access my website from another computer and I now know
why you were talking about the images not appearing. On my computer the
images are showing but I now know that you are unable to see them. I still
don't understand why. I did put them into a folder in frontpage before I
inserted them so I don't understand why the links are going to a location on
my hard drive along with all the other hyperlinks in the website. Can you or
anyone provide a solution to this because I've got 40 pages on the website
that can't be accessed!

Here's the basic drill:

Open FP
File | New Website
create the website at a location on your hardrive.

To add pages: File | New page....

**Always import your images into your website (usually into the images
folder) then from there you will insert them into your layout.

When your done and happy with your changes...

File | Publish Website via http method to your remote server.

ps. right now your website is gone, so i can't comment further.

Thanks Rob. I'm sure this is what I have done but obviously its not
working. The only thing I can think of is I saved the web in My documents
folder on my hard drive so I've now created a new website from scratch on the
the hard drive imported the pages from my other non-functioning site and used
the reports section to change all the hyperlinks. The links now start
File:///C:/mywebsitedomain/filename whereas before the links were much longer
with lots of %20's added in all over the place. I'm hoping this will now
work but ironically my hosting company's server has gone down so I can't try
it yet!

It might work.

In the meantime since you have lots of time on your hands waiting for your
server to come back up..with your website opened look for any file or folder
names that have spaces (they will appear as %20 ) and remove the spaces -
you can use dashes instead - .

Then Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks

and republish to the remote server...if it ever comes back. It's still
down...which is a bad sign IMO...to be down this long.

hth.

Rob, Thanks for the advice I will start changing the file names as you
suggested. Unfortunately creating a new website and importing the pages as I
described did not work. I have the index/home page up online
(www.originsnowsports.co.uk) but suspect I am the only the one who can see
the images despite having them in an images folder in the folders list of my
site. As you can see the hyperlinks still all link to my hard drive. I've
tried removing and re-entering hyperlinks but it always adds them starting
File:///C:/thenameofmywebsite folder. Is it to do with the base locations of
my pages? I understand why people are saying I've not created a website.
Originally I went into FP created a new one page site and file new blank page
when I added new web pages. Is this not correct? If not is there a quick way
I can create a new site add the pages I've created and get the links to work?

Looks like you're working with a disc based web on your local machine.
Typically, they would be in My Document\My Webs\yourwebname
Since you can have as many webs as you want it's important you don't spread
them all over de place.

Look...forget your online web for a few days till you get the hang of this.

Open FP
File | New Website
now just create a new web...call it anything you want...Fred, Barney,
Wilma...whatever. But don't store it in the folder the way you have your
other one... look for your My Webs folder and put it there so your path
*may* look something like this C:\My Docments\My Webs\wilma . I f later you
wanted to create a different web it could be C:\My Documents\My Webs\barney
etc.

FP will create the website and several other associated folders in Fred
Barney or Wilma.

Now add a few blank pages...name them anything.

Now File | Import a file... from this dialog browse to any image outside of
your web (somewhere else on your hardrive) and IMPORT that image to your
Images folder (you should have your images folder selected before you browse
around or your imported image may end up in the root of the web...but no
biggie.

Just mess around with this and get the hang of it...don't even think
"finished product, finished web".

It's a zen thing..

hth..

Rob. Thanks for your advice. I think my problem has arisen right back at
the beginning when I saved my web. For some reason FP didn't like me saving
the web in My Docs because it has only allowed me to add internal hyperlinks
starting
File:///C:/My Documents/thenameofmywebsite/name of file etc. I don't think
having spaces in my file/page titles helped either. Anyway I made a mistake
somewhere and have started again. Fortunately I can cut and paste the text
into the new web but I am having to start agin with adding the hyperlinks -
when I simply imported the pages I did not solve the problem and the site
failed to publish. Do you know of any way of deleting all the hyperlinks in
my unpublished site rather than going in individually? Thanks again.

Spaces in your file names will not matter on your machine, but they may
online depending on what server you're on, so stick to lower case and no
spaces in folder and file names.

With your local website opened you can edit hyperlinks from: View | Reports
| Site Summary | hyperlinks - Im not sure if you can delete them from t
here though.
